Now, all the rest of us are eligible to compete in the International Blues Challenge. The Blues Foundation has
loosened its rules, promising that the 24th annual competition in February
2008 will be best and fiercest ever.
BLUSD is eager to participate in a big way. BLUSD plans to send IBC competitors
to Memphis in the Band Ccategory.
As part of that, our IBC dates are all Saturday afternoons, noon to 5, on Aug. 11, 18 & 25. The finals will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15.
The BLUSD sponsored competition is open to any act, including those outside
of the San Diego area, that is not already sponsored by another organization.
BLUSD’s nominee will also have a January send-off party before they head
into the IBC and compete for more than $20,000 in cash, prizes and the prestige
of being crowned The Next Big Thing.
Winners of the IBC competition receive
cash, recording studio time, career booking and promotional advice and the opportunity
to play at a string of blues clubs around the country as well as on the annual
Ultimate Rhythm & Blue Cruise out of Florida.
Are you, or do you know, a San Diego blues band act that deserves a shot at
international recognition? Here is THE opportunity. The IBC has evolved into the
nation's biggest and most respected showcase for Blues musicians ready to take
their act to the national stage, but who just need that extra break. The IBC is
a judged Battle of the Bands in which competitors play a short set for a panel
of judges. Want to participate? Contact BLUSD.
Basically, BLUSD will follow the IBC rules , with variations,
such as:
• Semifinal rounds will feature 15-minute sets with 20 minutes between sets
for breakdown/setup.
• Acts must bring all their own instruments and amps, including drum kits. A
house PA system will be provided.
• The act that wins the San Diego IBC competition must be prepared to travel
to Memphis with the same members that perform in the semifinals/finals.
Replacement musicians will only be allowed by the special
consent of BLUSD for unusual circumstances.
Any act that cannot fulfill this obligation
may be disqualified from participating in Memphis.
